MONTEZUMA CASTLE NATIONAL MONUMENT

If Tuzigoot was today’s equivalent of last week’s visit to Wupatki, Montezuma castle parallels last week’s visit to the cliff dwellings at Tonto NM. In this case, we couldn’t enter the buildings, only admire them from the footpath below, but they are very admirable.

I may actually have enjoyed examining the cliff beyond the “Castle” more than the castle itself. The cliff still shows signs that a dwelling once stood there, but because the cliff only provided a back wall and not also an overhang roof, it did not survive the centuries. My archaeologist brain enjoys doing the heavier imaginative legwork posed by only having clues to examine.
